Introduction to Prompt Engineering and GenAI Tools to Support Literature Reviews – Nov. 28, 2024
Session Description
November 28 2024 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm
The Centre for Research & Innovation Support (CRIS), in collaboration with the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation and University of Toronto Libraries, is hosting a hands-on workshop that aims to equip researchers with essential knowledge and skills for using Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in their work. Participants will learn to craft effective prompts and will explore the application of GenAI for common literature review tasks through practical demonstrations using Microsoft Copilot, ResearchRabbit, and Elicit. Overall, this session will position GenAI as a supportive tool to enhance scholarly work rather than a replacement for expertise and critical thinking.
Intended audience:
- Faculty researchers and their teams from any discipline
Learning Objectives
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Craft effective prompts to enhance GenAI outputs
- Employ GenAI tools to find and summarize scholarly literature
- Appraise the merits and limitations of GenAI tools to inform which tool(s) to use for various literature review tasks
Additional Information
- This is a limited enrollment workshop. Preference will be given to faculty researchers.
- To maximize the opportunity for participation, there are two dates available for signup; either November 28 from 10:30 am-12:00 pm or December 10 from 2:30-4:00 pm. Please only register for one session.
- No prior experience is needed to fully participate, however, a basic understanding of GenAI technology is encouraged. Please view the ‘Navigating GenAI: An Introduction for Researchers’ session recording before the workshop to be familiar with key concepts, challenges, and opportunities of GenAI in scholarly work.
Technology requirements:
- Participants are required to bring a laptop with with Microsoft Edge installed.
- Additional information about technology requirements will be sent to participants prior to the session
